Shankend - Country holiday cottage in Scotland
In the beautiful Scottish borders region, 7 miles south of Hawick, Shankend is the perfect place to relax and appreciate the picturesque countryside. This very comfortable 3 bedroomed cottage is in fact the north wing of an Edwardian Former Hunting Lodge, set in 100 acres of ground. It has been carefully renovated in a pleasant country style and is well equipped with double glazing, central heating and a cosy woodburning stove in the lounge. Popular activities are walking, golfing, fishing, horse riding and on and off road cycling in this area where nature can be viewed at its seasonal best with wildlife in abundance. This region is not only full of activity and heritage, but also acts as a fantastic base from which to explore the nearby towns and villages, with a wide range of good quality cafes, restaurants and pubs. Edinburgh, Carlisle, Newcastle and the Northumbrian coast are all within a surprisingly easy drive.
With its own fenced garden, the cottage sits in front of the stunning Shankend Viaduct, a magnificent 15 arched bridge on the disused Waverley Line. The outlook is of sheep grazing on rolling hills and of the "burn" winding its way through the ancient valley. The nearby towns of Hawick, Jedburgh, Melrose and Kelso boast a choice of famous knitwear firms and specialist shops where you will find the softest cashmere, cosiest woollens and finest tweed. We are also proud of the award winning parks, historic castles, abbeys and stately homes. Golfers are spoilt for choice with over 20 courses around the Scottish Borders, and there is excellent salmon and trout fishing on the nearby rivers and lochs. Pets are welcome at Shankend and we have stables and paddocks should you wish to bring your own horse. There are great paths and tracks ideal for walking or riding starting right from the doorstep. The mountain biking is superb, with 7 Stanes less then 20 miles away with its world class trails. |
